Mole Removal
Assessment first, then removal by shave excision or cautery — with histology whenever it is warranted.
- Duration
- 30 minutes
- Downtime
- A small scab for 7–10 days; pinkness fades over some weeks.
- Results
- Immediate removal; the scar settles across 3–6 months.
- Sessions
- Single session per lesion

Every mole is examined before anything is removed. Most are entirely benign and can be taken off in minutes for cosmetic reasons. Some have features that warrant closer attention, and in those cases the lesion is excised in a way that preserves it for laboratory analysis rather than destroyed.
We will not cauterise a lesion that should be sent for histology, however much quicker that would be. If a mole has changed in size, colour, border or symmetry, or if it itches or bleeds, that assessment is the entire point of the appointment.
Benefits
- Clinical assessment before any decision to remove
- Minimal scarring with a well-chosen technique
- Usually completed in a single short visit

What happens during treatment
Dermatological assessment
The lesion is examined, and we decide whether removal is appropriate and by which method.
Local anaesthetic
The area is numbed completely; the procedure itself is painless.
Removal
Shave excision or cautery is performed according to the lesion's depth and type.
Histology & healing
The specimen is sent for analysis where indicated, and wound care is explained.
Common questions
There is always a mark where a lesion is removed. With a well-chosen technique it is usually a flat, pale spot far less noticeable than the mole. We discuss the likely trade-off before proceeding.
Please book an assessment rather than a removal. A mole that has changed in size, shape, colour or border, or that itches or bleeds, needs to be examined and may need to be sent for laboratory analysis.
